Hastelloy is a unique nickel-molybdenum based superalloy that offers great durability and corrosion resistance. It’s ideally used in situations where high levels of corrosion are present like in oil fields and saltwater.
Spex uses CNC machines to manufacture precision Hastelloy parts and components. We are an industry-leading machine shop and help our customers fulfill their part needs.
Hastelloy, and most Nickel-based alloys, are more expensive and more difficult to machine. This makes Hastelloy parts less common, and almost never in consumer products.
Hastelloy parts are highly corrosion resistant, and can handle high heat, harsh chemicals, acidity, and tough working conditions. The industries that commonly use Hastelloy parts are Aerospace, chemical processing, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Even though Hastelloy parts are significantly more expensive compared to stainless steel, they can tolerate harsh chemicals and high heat exposure for longer periods of time.
Hastelloy is a less common metal used for CNC machining projects. Even though it takes more effort to machine precision Hastelloy parts, CNC machining with the right tools and experience still offers great precision, commonly reaching a ±0.002″ tolerance.
Spex machines precision custom Hastelloy parts, including:
“Hastelloy” is a trademarked name that’s used for about 20 different high-performance nickel-based alloys. Like most metals, there are various grades or alloys of Hastelloy that each have slightly different properties.
Common grades of Hastelloy include: C-276, C-22, C-2000, B-2, and X.
Hastelloy C-276 is the most commonly used alloy. Hastelloy C-276 is one of the only materials that can resist the corrosion of wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide solution, making it suitable for chemical processing parts.
Hastelloy C-22 has better overall corrosion resistance compared to other alloys. It can withstand a range of chemicals and acids, making it useable in chemical and petrochemical applications.
Hastelloy C-2000 is an alloy that adds a small amount of copper. This combination makes it resistant to various chemicals and acids.
Hastelloy B-2 is an alloy with lower carbon and silicon content, making it good for welding. B-2 can also be machined- usually after being annealed. It has a wide range of uses in the chemistry, petrochemicals, energy manufacturing, and pollution control industries.
Hastelloy X is an alloy with excellent high temperature strength and oxidation resistance. This is most commonly used in gas turbine engines because of its high heat tolerance.
